Meet the People - South African Braai

“…we build a fire, light it, and then stand around it and talk. We talk and argue and laugh around our fires until the world becomes a better place. We sit around our fires under the starry night skies and we talk. If we have something to celebrate, we have a braai. If we need moral support or advice on business decisions, how to raise our children or what to make of current political or social affairs, we have a braai. If it is weekend, regardless, we have a braai.

The word barbecue does not do justice to the exact way that we roast meat on the open fire. It excludes the larger cultural significance of the event. We braai.” – Antoinette de Chavonnes Vrugt, “My Hungry Heart“.

MEET THE PEOPLE – SOUTH AFRICAN BRAAI

Come and join us at our South African home for a real South African braai. Experience what not many other tourists to our country will experience: a meal around the fire at real South African home with true South African hospitality. Taste excellent local produce and meats paired with our favourite wines, selected and prepared freshly by Hendrik and Chrissy on the fire and in our home.

This is an interactive, social experience and you are welcome to jump in and help us prepare the meal, or you are more than welcome to sit back around of the fire and watch us in action.

We make an effort to highlight the best in local produce; responsibly-sourced seafood; free-range meat and poultry products.  We aim to support small local artisans and shops. We don’t just buy or prepare any food; we source and prepare food with a story, which we will share around the fire with you.

Sample Menu:

Arrival snack and starters: (17:30 for 18:00)

  • Local cheeses,
  • olives and preserves
  • served with artisanal bread

Main Meal

  • Three different meats grilled to perfection over the fire. (Yes you read right, we love our meat!)
  • Freshly prepared vegetable dish
  • Fresh Salad (from our garden, seasonal) with Chrissy’s homemade dressing
  • Potato dish (A braai is not complete without potatoes)

Wine Pairing: Depending on the meat and veg, but we will have a red and white option available. Wine will be sourced from one of the wineries within 20km of our home.
Dessert:

Chrissy is the expert when it comes to the sweet side. She will treat you to a locally-inspired dessert, such as seasonal pear crumble prepared in a black pot on the fire; or lemon ice cream, made with lemons from our backyard trees.

Wine Pairing: Red, white and dessert wine options available.

Coffee and tea available

Please note: This is really our home, not a fine dining restaurant! Our wine glasses may be mismatched, and our toddler will be running around, so please don’t expect perfection!  Do expect to feel comfortable and at home.

Dietary requirements: We are inspired by what is fresh, seasonal, and available – our menu choices are therefore subject to change!  Please do let us know if you have any dietary preferences or allergies. We can cater for lactose intolerant, gluten free, or vegetarian diets.  We can easily make some dishes vegan, but for a 100% vegan meal, please let us know in advance so that we can bring in a vegan chef.

Seafood: Seasonally we have some excellent and fresh seafood available. Hendrik grew up by the sea and is a keen fisherman who loves to prepare fresh seafood. Please let us know if seafood is of interest.

Catch your own: Catch your own fish on a fishing charter, and enjoy a seafood feast prepared by us when you return!  This experience is seasonal – please enqure.

Book this as an add-on: Book a braai as an add-on to any of our group tours, private day tours or multi day tours with Earthstompers Adventures or Cape Food & Wine Tours and get a 10% discount on your meal.

Group size: The heart of our home is an indoor braai and long table where we host our guests; we can seat  8 guests max.  For bigger groups, please chat to us, we have some great venues in our area.

Join us sourcing: You can extend your day and join Hendrik to source local produce and meet all the local food suppliers: We will visit a local organic veggie garden, a local butcher and we will visit a local winery.

Looking forward to welcome you to our home!
